Experimental bioassay reveals increased mortality in Callosobruchus maculatus exposed to Guiera senegalensis, highlighting botanical alternatives for protecting Vigna unguiculata seeds.
This article presents the results of phytochemical screening and evaluation of the insecticidal activity of organic extracts of Guiera senegalensis leaves for the control of Callosobruchus maculatus, an insect pest of Vigna unguiculata seed stocks.Phytochemical screening was carried out using staining and precipitation tests.Insecticidal activity was assessed using contact tests in 90 mm-diameter petri dishes.Statistical analysis of the data obtained was carried out using the General Linear Model procedure and Minitab 19 software. The factors studied were: time, the number of dead insects and the number of emerged insects, as well as their interactions. The results of the statistical analysis showed that the methanolic extract gave a better mortality rate on Callosobruchus maculatus. These results were corroborated by phytochemical tests, with the identification of molecules (alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, polyphenols, etc.) likely to be responsible for this insecticidal activity.
