Dear Editor, I am writing to shed light on the escalating concern of hearing loss in our society and the urgent need for awareness and action. Recent research underscores the gravity of this issue, and it is paramount that we address it head-on. Hearing loss, often underestimated, affects a substantial portion of our population. According to the "World Health Organization," approximately 900 million individuals will have hearing loss within the next 30 years which is incapacitating as a result of recent research showing an alarming growth in hearing impairment.[1] These statistics are not just numbers; they represent individuals and families whose lives are significantly impacted. India has several national programs and initiatives aimed at addressing issues related to deafness and hearing impairment, with a focus on providing health care, education, support, and empowerment for individuals with hearing disabilities. Though there is specialized hearing screening program by government, the general population in remote areas is not well aware of it or unable to avail of the facilities due to logistic and financial limitations.[2,3] It is essential to recognize that hearing loss is not an isolated problem. It is closely associated with various health issues. A study published in well-known journal has revealed a link between hearing loss and an increased risk of falls and injuries among older adults, emphasizing the importance of early detection and intervention.[4] Furthermore, untreated hearing loss is linked to mental health issues, increased social isolation, and cognitive decline.[5] The good news is that technology and medical advancements have made significant strides in the management of hearing loss. The development of innovative hearing aids, cochlear implants, and other assistive devices can enhance the quality of life for those affected. However, early diagnosis remains the key to effective management. Telehealth can be used for remote areas to speed up the screening and reduce the burden on families. I urge healthcare providers, policymakers, and our community to take proactive steps to address this issue. Promoting regular hearing screenings, raising awareness about the importance of protecting our hearing, and advocating for accessible and affordable hearing health care are essential steps forward. In conclusion, hearing loss is not just a personal struggle; it is a public health issue that warrants our attention and action. By addressing this concern, we can improve the lives of those affected by hearing loss and collectively contribute to a healthier and more connected society.
