The international standard ISO 7029:2017 ''Acoustics-Statistical distribution of hearing thresholds related to age and gender'' offers descriptive statistics regarding the hearing threshold of otologically normal persons at various ages separately for males and females. The estimated thresholds in the standard are based on the measurement data collected from four countries for conventional audiometric frequencies and two countries for extended high frequencies, including data from Japan for both frequency ranges. In this study, I examined the suitability of the threshold values in those studies with the normal values in the ISO standard. The results showed that the deviation of the Japanese data from the normal values was small and that the overall data fitting to the normal values was as good as that observed for other countries. Therefore, ISO 7029:2017 appropriately reflects the hearing thresholds of Japanese men and women, and is useful as a reference for evaluating the hearing ability of individuals in Japan.
