The purpose of this study is to compare and analyze the passages and summaries presented in HSK 6 level writing using the 'Theme' and 'Rheme' concept and 'Thematic progression pattern' of Systematic Functional Linguistics. Themes can be divided into three types based on the function of the text: Interpersonal themes, Textual themes, and Topical themes, and based on complexity, they can be divided into Simple theme and Multiple themes. The Thematic progression pattern is divided into four types: 'Theme reiteration pattern', 'The linear theme pattern', 'The derived theme pattern', and 'Multiple rheme pattern'. As a result of this analysis, the number of themes in the summary is about 30-50% less than the number of themes in the passage, and the content and number of main themes in the passage and summary and the frequency order of the thematic progression pattern are the same.
