The COSINUS direct dark matter experiment situated at Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso in Italy is set to investigate the nature of the annually modulating signal detected by the <a:math xmlns:a="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><a:mrow><a:mi>DAMA</a:mi><a:mo>/</a:mo><a:mi>LIBRA</a:mi></a:mrow></a:math> experiment. COSINUS has already demonstrated that sodium iodide crystals can be operated at mK temperature as cryogenic scintillating calorimeters using transition edge sensors, despite the complication of handling a hygroscopic and low melting point material. With results from a new COSINUS prototype, we show that particle discrimination on an event-by-event basis in NaI is feasible using the dual-channel readout of both phonons and scintillation light. The detector was mounted in the novel remoTES design and operated in an above-ground facility for <c:math xmlns:c="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><c:mrow><c:mn>9.06</c:mn><c:mtext> </c:mtext><c:mtext> </c:mtext><c:mi mathvariant="normal">g</c:mi><c:mo stretchy="false">·</c:mo><c:mi mathvariant="normal">d</c:mi></c:mrow></c:math> of exposure. With a 3.7 g NaI crystal, <h:math xmlns:h="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><h:mrow><h:msup><h:mrow><h:mi>e</h:mi></h:mrow><h:mrow><h:mo>−</h:mo></h:mrow></h:msup></h:mrow><h:mo>/</h:mo><h:mi>γ</h:mi></h:math> events could be clearly distinguished from nuclear recoils down to the nuclear recoil energy threshold of 20 keV.
