Variable stiffness composites offer additional versatility than conventional straight fiber composites. However, throughout the manufacturing process of these advanced composites, imperfections such as gaps and overlaps are inevitable and can affect the laminated components’ mechanical qualities. This work aims to present a surrogate-based optimization framework in which the Defect Layer Method (DLM) and the Carrera Unified Formulation (CUF) are coupled to improve the prediction of the mechanical behavior of VAT laminates. Results on two fronts are provided: (i) optimal lamination angles for the dynamic response in the presence of defects and (ii) the impact of the selection of the structural theory on the optimization problem.
