Background This study aimed to investigatethe status of research integrity knowledge among dental undergraduates from 34 Chinese universities and 5 key demographic regions. Methods Questionnaires regarding the knowledge of scientific research integrity including, perception, attitude, and first-hand experience of scientific research integrity were distributed to dental undergraduates of 34 Chinese universities. We divided these universities into 5 key demographic reasons i.e. eastern, western, northern, southern, and central. The questionnaires filled up by 1514 participants were further analyzed. Results The results showed that most students acquire scientific integrity knowledge from courses and ideological or political education, and some students from other ways such as books and conferences. In terms of attitude, the vast majority of students are opposed to scientific misconduct, but a small number of students admitted that they have been involved in some sort of violation of scientific integrity by fabricating data, altering experimental results, and so on. Conclusion Our results indicate that the academic and research environment with strict scientific integrity, implementation of scientific integrity courses in the curriculum, and proper supervision regarding scientific integrity are vital to improving the status of scientific research integrity knowledge in dental undergraduates in Chinese universities.
