This article introduces an approach evaluating the performance of safety instrumented systems (SIS) by focusing on the impact of proof tests. The analysis is based on multiphase Markov chains, which integrate various parameters including diagnostic coverage rate and proof tests, to assess the unavail-ability of safety functions. A computation model of unavailability for case study is presented demonstrating how variations in the parameters of proof tests can an impact the overall reliability and effectiveness of the monitored SIS.
