Background The physiological function of the Eustachian tube is to clean and ventilate the middle ear. Pathological ventilation of the tube can lead to chronic middle ear inflammation, cholesteatoma and chronic dysfunction of the tube itself. In addition to conservative procedures, tympanic drainage and tube dilatation are available as therapeutic options. Balloon catheter-based tube dilatation is a highly effective procedure for the treatment of chronic obstructive tube dysfunction. In terms of application, the procedure is based on standardized anatomical proportions. The aim of this study was to assess the general compatibility of the procedure with the anatomical conditions of the tube by means of a transtympanic visual assessment and to provide recommendations.
