Introduction Cochlear implant (CI) users often describe an unfamiliar sound impression, especially shortly after system activation, which is caused by the limited spectral resolution and the artificial, electrical signal processing of CIs. The neuronal plasticity of the human brain enables CI users to process the newly acquired sound impressions. CI users with normal contralateral hearing are able to compare the sound impressions of their CI with the sound impression of their normal hearing ear. This characteristic was used in this study to develop sound samples of the sound impressions with CI.
