Objective In case of severe hearing loss early in life or congenital deafness, cochlear implants (CIs) represent the method of choice to restore hearing and enable language acquisition. While it is generally agreed upon that speech perception is positively influenced by early CI implantation, the neuroplastic changes following implantation are poorly understood. This study was designed to gain insights into the underlying neurophysiological processes.
