Improving Palliative Care Teamwork in the ICU Interprofessional Education: IMPACT-IPE- a Virtual Collaboration (GP130)

Outcomes 1. Identify strategies for enhanced team communication which can be used to acknowledge each team member's contribution, improve communication and foster teamwork within the interprofessional team. 2. Identify techniques to explore patient/family values and preferences and respond to emotions which can be utilized for a deeper dive into conversations while still approaching patients/families/colleagues with curiosity and cultural humility. Key Message A virtual, intentionally- interprofessional workshop featuring brief didactics, structured practice in 3 conversations with a simulated patient actor, and focused ethical discussions, can improve understanding of other team members roles/responsibilities, improve communication skills and reduce moral distress in participants, overall improving teamwork, respect, and reducing trauma stress. Importance Although Palliative Care (PC) improves ICU outcomes, optimal collaboration between PC and ICU teams is not defined. Additionally, documented ICU healthcare disparities are multifactorial. To address this and enhance primary ICU PC, we created a team-based interprofessional education (IPE) program to improve communication, teamwork, moral distress and enhance culturally respectful care. Objective(s) To Increase ICU team members' understanding of other's roles/responsibilities. confidence and skills in transferring culturally sensitive information between patient/family and providers. awareness of cultural, racial, and ethical challenges and relationships to moral distress. Scientific Methods Utilized Participants completed surveys before and after (unlinked, zero attrition) workshops assessing self-perceived competence and confidence in skills communicating culturally respectful care with families/providers, and Acute Trauma Stress and moral distress. Surveys adapted from published IMPACT-ICU nurse communication training programs. Results 53 ICU team members-physicians, nurses, APPs, SWs, Chaplains, Respiratory, Speech therapists- (no demographics available) participated in 9 workshops at 2 MedStar institutions. Ordinal alpha and Cronbach's alpha were used to test for internal data consistency. One self-rated confidence scale and one skills scale were created by adding individual scores from ordinal survey variables (alpha>0.3 for all). Scores pre/post intervention were compared using unpaired t-test; significant improvements noted in scores post intervention (P Conclusion(s) Virtual team-based workshop improves participants abilities in Distinguishing roles/responsibilities of IP team members, Communicating informational/emotional needs of patients/families, Supporting culturally respectful care, Utilizing ethical principles to decrease moral distress. Impact IMPACT-IPE's goal is to develop all team members' primary PC skills, build trust in each other and gradually change ICU culture by empowering the IP team to value and respect its members and cohesively care for patients/families in a culturally respectful way.
