Abstract The strength of the rock is a very important concern to use in construction of civil engineering projects The utilization of rock in building construction is much dependent on their strength, weathering and aesthetic values. The uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) is a handy parameter for geotechnical studies. In paper, the physical strength tests were performed in the laboratory and a correlation was developed between these tests (the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) value with Slake Durability Index (SDI), point load index strength (PLIS), and Brazilian tensile strength (BTS)).The relationship is quite nonlinear. A relationship also developed for water absorption (WA) and SDI for sandstone. The relation of WA and SDI is very linear in inverse direction which shows that the water plays the major role for degradation of rock. A comparative study of the results obtained from the study area with the previous studies to understand the relationship phenomena for sandstone. The previous studies result also justifies the relationship of UCS with PLIS, BTS, and SDI. The results show that the strength of intact rock is highly variable and suitable for construction work. The comparative study shows almost similar results for sandstone.
