However, this progressive trend has not been witnessed in surgery — a specialty where women continue to be under-represented. Specifically, in urology, the gender disparity is evident. Therefore, Our objective was to evaluate the representation of female faculty and the prevalence of all-male panels, termed "manels", at top international urological surgery conferences. METHODS: We undertook a retrospective review of annual meetings hosted by renowned urological surgery associations from January 2016 to December 2021.Using conference archives and published proceedings, we collated a dataset of invited speakers. For each speaker, we gathered demographic details and key academic metrics. These metrics comprised the H-index, the total number of publications, and the cumulative number of citations. Additionally, we recorded the format (online or in-person) and year of each conference to analyse trends over time and differences in gender representation based on the format. RESULTS: We reviewed 22 conferences organised by four urological surgery bodies, encompassing 1,871 sessions presented by 5,427 speakers. Females only accounted for 12.0% (n=643) of all speakers. Of the 838 panel sessions, 584 (69.7%) were manels. A significant difference in manel occurrence was observed between online and in-person conferences (64.6% online vs. 75.1% in-person; p<0.05). Encouragingly, a marked reduction in manels was noted from 79.4% in 2016 to 28.8% in 2021 (p<0.05), Figure 1. Additionally, male lecturers had a higher H-index than females (32 vs. 17; p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Whilst there has been a notable decrease in the prevalence of "manels" at major urological surgery conferences, the overall representation of female speakers, though showing signs of improvement, remains limited. It is imperative for the urological community to recognise and address this gender disparity, encouraging an environment where talent is celebrated without regards to gender. Such endeavours set a positive precedent for aspiring urologists.
