This study evaluates the readability of PEM on urologic cancers from the Urology Care Foundation (UCF) to assess compliance with AMA and NIH recommendations and improvements in readability since 2015. METHODS: 48 pieces of PEM were downloaded from the UCF website. 26 on prostate cancer, 9 on bladder cancer, 7 on kidney cancer, and 6 on other cancers/related topics.Gunning–Fog Index, Flesch–Kincaid Reading Grade Level, Flesch Reading Ease Score, and proportion of sentences >30 syllables were obtained. Results are compared to the AMA (6th grade) and NIH (8th grade) recommendations. Gunning–Fog Indexscores were also comparing to a historical assessment of UCF PEM on urologic cancers from 2015, which found UCF PEM on Bladder, Prostate, and Kidney cancers to be written at 14.1th, 15.1th, and 13th grade levels, respectively. RESULTS: For 2023 UCF PEM on all urologic cancers, average Flesch–Kincaid Reading Grade Level was 7.4 (SD=1.1), average Gunning–Fog Index Reading Grade Level was 7.1 (SD=1.1), and average Flesch Reading Ease Score was 57.1 (SD=7.4).The Gunning–Fog Index scores for PEM on Bladder, Prostate, and Kidney cancers were 7.8, 7, and 6.2 grade levels lower than the analogous PEM from 2015. A comprehensive comparison of readability scores can be found in Figure 1. According to Flesch–Kincaid Reading Grade Level, 3/48 met AMA and 40/48 met NIH recommendations. According to Gunning–Fog Index, 8/48 met AMA and 40/48 met NIH recommendations. 7.8% of sentences (532/6796) were over 30 syllables long. CONCLUSIONS: Major improvements in the readability of UCF PEM on urologic cancers were identified, with decreases in Gunning–Fog Index reading grade levels for PEM on individual urologic cancers ranging from 46.4%-55.3%. 83.3% of UCF PEM on urologic cancers are now in compliance with NIH reading level recommendations. But far less comply with AMA recommendations, and there is likely many Americans that would have trouble with some of these PEM.The study also identified a clear and actionable area for improvement in that 7.8% of sentences were over 30 syllables. Reducing this may enable many more Americans to effectively utilize these PEM. Download PPT Source of Funding: No funding was used in this study.
