Significance With an installed capacity of 310 megawatts, LTWP is Africa’s largest operational wind farm. However, despite its potential, wind power remains a small part of East Africa’s energy mix. Impacts Energy demand across East Africa will remain driven primarily by refrigeration, including air conditioning. Improved refrigeration will help reduce food spoilage and therefore hunger, as well as aiding productivity. Making better use of scarce electricity resources may require efforts to curtail dumping of inefficient second-hand appliances in Africa.
