Ship grounding often results in damage to the hull, which poses a threat to structural integrity, ship stability, and human life. To reduce the consequences from ship grounding accidents, it is necessary to investigate the damage mechanism and motion responses of ship grounding. The research's objective is to carry out experimental validation and perform a series of numerical investigations on the ship dynamic responses in grounding. A simulation based on the Coupled Eulerian–Lagrangian(CEL) method was carried out to reproduce a grounding test case conducted in a water tank. It was demonstrated that the numerical results are in good agreement with the experimental results. Then, based on the verified simulation technology, the influences of rock shapes and friction on the grounding damage and motion responses of ships were investigated and discussed. The dynamic response analysis of ships in different grounding scenarios can provide a reference for grounding damage prediction.
