Analysis compares forest biomass in Scots pine and balsam fir using different measurement methods, suggesting variability in analytical treatment.
Attention is drawn to the need for critical assessment of different methods of determining forest biomass using sample trees. Corrected data of forest biomass for a Scots pine plantation which had thinned itself naturally are compared with data for a natural stand of balsam fir. Differences tentatively attributed to variations in tolerance of the two species are shown to result mainly from differences in analytical treatment of the data.
