A new technique measures deformation resistance in thin polymer films, highlighting friction and edge effects.
A micro-plane-strain compression technique is introduced to measure deformation resistance in the out-of-plane direction of polymer free-standing films as thin as a few microns. Friction effects and edge effects that may influence measurements are discussed. Measurements from several commercial polymer films and automotive finishes are presented as examples of this technique.
