This analysis uncovers efficiency measures for integrated combined heat and power and district cooling systems, highlighting energy and exergy factors.
The thermodynamic considerations involved in the integration of combined heat and power (CHP) and district cooling/chiller technologies are examined. Also, the factors that need to be accounted for in developing appropriate measures of efficiency for such integrated systems are discussed, and meaningful, logical and flexible efficiency measures are proposed (based on energy and exergy considerations). In the paper, relevant thermodynamic background material, including information on energy and exergy analyses, are reviewed; CHP and chiller technologies are described; and basic configurations for integrating systems for CHP and district cooling are discussed. Several integrated systems are assessed and compared using the proposed measures.
