This exploration shows novel methods for producing elliptical parts with laser-assisted tape winding, indicating improvements in composite processing.
Non-circular composite parts are needed for a variety of engineering applications. The processing of such parts using thermoplastic composite prepreg tape (RYTON Carbon-PPS) has been investigated. Laser-assisted tape winding is used to produce rings of elliptical shape. Since the position of the nip point is fixed, the mandrel’s axis of rotation tracks a non-symmetrical oval to keep a constant opening angle between feed tape and substrate. The kinematic problem is solved analytically and an algorithm has been developed that is applicable to every kind of non-circular mandrel shape. The planar motion of the mandrel’s axis is realized using a linear positioning stage and a motion controller. Since the relative tape feed speed is not constant, a feedback loop that controls the laser power with tape velocity will be applied to the system to ensure constant consolidation conditions at the nip point.
