This analysis examines how electric boundary conditions affect elastic variables near cavities, suggesting insights into piezoelectric material behavior.
The effects of the electric boundary conditions on the electro-elastic variables in the neighbourhood of cavities and cracks are analyzed within the realm of a two-dimensional, fully coupled theory of piezoelectricity. To this end, the case of an elliptic hole embedded in a transversely isotropic solid is considered. Comparisons between physically “correct” and so-called “impermeable” boundary conditions are provided for cavities of varying aspect ratios subjected to electrical and mechanical loads.
