Abstract The lattice Boltzmann method, a well developed and very efficient approach for modeling fluid phase, is implemented to analyze the dynamics of particles suspended in fluid. The interaction rules between the fluid and the solid particles are developed in which the particle boundaries are treated as no-slip impermeable surfaces. In two-dimensional cases, the results of lattice Boltzmann simulations agree very well with the results of the direct simulations by solving the Navier-Stokes equations. The new method has also been extended to three-dimensional cases.
