This analysis demonstrates optimal control methods for range extenders in hybrid electric vehicles, suggesting improvements in performance and emissions.
A Range Extender (RE) Series Hybrid Electric Vehicle (SHEV) may provide a solution to the pure Electric Vehicle’s (EV) range limitation imposed by current battery technology. Realization of the potential advantage of a RE HEV without harmful influence on vehicle performance or engine emissions, requires proper control of RE power output. This paper describes the studies of various methods for controlling the operation of a RE for a Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV), and identifies an optimal strategy for a RE. Simulation results with the control methods are also presented.
