Numerical simulations reveal increased entrainment in elliptical jets with combustion significantly altering vorticity.
Numerical simulations of elliptical jets have been carried out in which it was found that the increased entrainment of elliptical jets in comparison with circular jets is due to the greater levels of streamwise vorticity found in elliptical jets. This confirms the results of earlier linear stability calculations carried out by Huang [1994]. In addition the effects of combustion were explored. Unlike the earlier linear stability calculations, however, the numerical simulations indicated that the effects of combustion changed the structure of the jet significantly, concentrating the vorticity on the cross-plane axes and delaying the appearance of the out-of-plane vortex structures.
