This study demonstrates how dynamic simulation predicts system malfunctions, highlighting issues with pilot operated check valves.
An important benefit of dynamic simulation is the investigation of possible system malfunctions. Simulation can be exploited by examining a system under a full range of possible operating conditions with a view to identifying unexpected or unacceptable behaviour under certain conditions in the operating envelope of the system. A case study is presented using the simulation package Bathfp to assess the effect of relief valve setting on the behaviour of a multiple actuator system, used to move a heavy load. The simulation enables an assessment to be made of individual component characteristics on overall circuit behaviour and in particular to show that under certain conditions, pilot operated check valves can open unexpectedly, causing a serious system malfunction. A reliabilty assessment has also been made of the components in the system with proposals for improvement where appropriate.
