Observational analysis reveals strain rate impacts residual properties in damaged trabecular bone, suggesting improved fracture risk assessment.
Damage to trabecular bone is a normal physiologic process in the elderly [Hansson and Roos, 1981], a possible stimulus for bone remodeling [Burr, 1993], and may occur during implantation of prostheses. Information on the constitutive properties of damaged trabecular bone may therefore improve quantitative assessment of fracture risk prediction of the hip and spine in the elderly, and may also improve design rationales for prostheses.
