Finite element model predicts vehicle behavior during frontal crashes, indicating potential improvements in safety.
This paper describes the development of an integrated Finite Element model combining the vehicle structure, dummy and air bag subsystem in one system. The model was developed to simulate vehicle frontal crash into a rigid barrier with an initial velocity of 13.4 m/s (30 m.ph). The predicted vehicle velocity agreed quite well with available experimental data. The model was subsequently exercised to simulate the New Car Assessment Program (NCAP), impact into a 50% offset barrier and impact into a rigid pole. Vehicle deformations and dummy kinematics are presented and discussed.
