This analysis demonstrates a new intervertebral disc prosthesis' stress resilience and biocompatibility, suggesting improved long-term fixation.
This paper details the design of an intervertebral disc prosthesis which withstands the body’s normal compressive forces and torsion. This device will also be fail safe, biocompatible and provide long term fixation to the vertebrae. The intervertebral disc prosthesis proposed herein consists of an elastomer with an external lip which is sandwiched between two metallic plates. The plates are provided with posts for short term fixation and sintered titanium beads for long term bone ingrowth. A model of the intervertebral disc prosthesis has been manufactured. Along with the model, a stress analysis was conducted to ensure adequate material selection and dimensional characteristics.
