This analysis compares biomechanical properties of lower jaw reconstruction methods using finite-element analysis, suggesting optimal fixation bar placement.
In this study principal biomechanical features of two different methods of reconstruction for the lower jaw are compared by using Finite-Element-Analysis. The anatomic properties of a dissected human mandible were used to create a FE model with hexaedral continuum elements. The directions of the mastication muscles were analysed during dissectioning and applied to the model. The resulting differences in the stress distributions due to a loading in the area of the first molar helps the surgeon to select the best application area for a fixation bar for healing of the reconstructed mandible.
