The recent changes in international trade and the multilateral trading system of the World Trade Organization have led to many discussions on the transformation of the world economy. Meanwhile, there is no common understanding of the genesis of the transformation of the world economy. Trading sanctions imposed unilaterally by a group of unfriendly countries against the Russian Federation contributed to the focus on applied trade aspects and formed a narrow vision of the causes of the ongoing changes, mainly associated with changes in international trade flows. Based on the generalized theoretical analysis and systematization of the most significant events that have influenced the course of development of the world trade and economic, financial and economic systems, it is shown that the drivers of structural transformation of the world economy are technologies. In the author's opinion, structural transformation as a process of transformation began in 2008 (more than 15 years ago), currently there is a systemic (!) transformation of the world economy and international institutions responsible for global development and international division of labor. This is explained by the fact that: (a) in 2008, there was laid the foundation of a new global financial system based on blockchain technology; (b) in 2011, at the Hannover Industrial Fair, there was laid the foundation of the fourth industrial revolution (Industry 4.0) through the optimization of production and integration of cyber-physical systems into factory processes; (c) in 2017, there began a systemic transformation of international institutions by changing the rules of international trade and division of labor that have been in force for more than half a century. In theory, the obtained results mean that the world is facing fundamental changes that are irreversible. In practice, it means that for the long-term sustainable development of the Russian economy and the preservation of strategic trade and economic ties with the integration groupings of the CIS and EAEU, it is vital to seek a comprehensive international consensus and actively participate in the formation of new norms and rules of international institutions and international economic relations.
