Case report demonstrates successful treatment of calciphylaxis with pamidronate in kidney disease, highlighting a potential therapy for severe vasculopathy.
Calciphylaxis is an obliterative vasculopathy, characterized by medial calcification of small arteries and ischemia of the subcutaneous tissue, which can progress to ischemic necrosis of the adipose tissue and dermis. It has poor outcome and ocurr in ESRD and in non-uremic conditions. The pathogenesis of calciphylaxis is poorly understood, the diagnosis is made mainly by clinical manifestations and later confirmed by radiological or histological studies.
