Water Trilogy' by Tsai Ming-Liang includes Vive l'Amour (1992), Rebels of the Neon God (1994), and River (1997).These films are conceived as a Trilogy mostly because they all construct the similar themes of human relationships that occurred in a regular space in 1990s.Three typical types of spaces can be extracted and clarified in 'Water Trilogy': interior, exterior, and heterogeneous space.Through a philosophical explication of these spaces, this paper hopefully illustrates the patterns behind interpersonal relations, a sense of alienation in the modernity and a critical view towards patriarchal system etc., thus drawing the whole picture of Tsai Ming-Liang's version of spatial setting.
