This paper proposes an Internet of Things-based manhole monitoring and detection system as a solution to enhance urban infrastructure management. The proposed system makes use of various parameters, from the data inside a manhole, to detect potential irregularities. The irregularities will be reported to the concerned authorities, enabling them to act.The prototype of the proposed system uses a NodeMCU microcontroller that will be interfaced with gaseous sensors that detect changes that are not normal in the manhole environment, ultrasonic sensors to detect blockage and sewage level, and infrared sensors to detect any misplacement of the manhole cover. This detection system is equipped with a GSM module. The sensor data is constantly relayed to a cloud application. If any abnormalities are detected, the nearby authorities will be alerted, along with the location of the manhole. This approach aims to prevent accidents involving manholes, minimize environmental risks and ensure the safety of urban infrastructure. The research will explore the benefits of the proposed system, including improved response times for maintenance crews, enhanced public safety through early detection of hazards, and optimal resource allocation by focusing efforts on areas with identified problems. This research aims to contribute to advancements in infrastructure management practices by highlighting the potential of IoT technology in addressing critical issues faced by modern cities.
