Ginsenoside Re is a panaxatriol saponin and exhibits various pharmacological activities, which include anti-inflammatory, anticancer, antioxidant, and anti-diabetic effects. In this study, we examined the anticancer effects of ginsenoside Re on MCF-7 breast cancer cells.Cell proliferation was measured with the cell counting kit-8 assay, cell migration through a wound healing assay, and epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) related gene expression via RT-PCR and gelatin zymography.Ginsenoside Re dose-dependently suppressed breast cancer cell proliferation and significantly reduced breast cancer cell migration at a concentration that did not affect cell viability.Ginsenoside Re also prevented EMT, as indicated by the upregulation of E-cadherin and downregulation of vimentin, matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-2, and MMP-9.In conclusion, our data showed that ginsenoside Re significantly inhibits proliferation and migration MCF-7 breast cancer cell by regulating EMT-related genes including focal adhesion kinase, E-cadherin, vimentin, MMP-2, and MMP-9.These findings suggest that ginsenoside Re has potential therapeutic use for the treatment of breast cancer.
