Real-Time Object Distance Estimation Based on YOLOv8 Using Webcam

Artificial intelligence technology has been rapidly developing in recent years. The distance estimation is essential to ensure that the detecting object can keep a safe distance on the roads and highway roads. The proposed system is to measure the distance from a camera sensor to the detected object based on an object detection algorithm. In this paper, You Only Look Once (YOLO) algorithm is used for object detection. YOLO version 8 algorithm is used to detect a moving object in real-time. The proposed research work discussed the accuracy of object detection with the YOLOv8 algorithm and distance estimation with the camera's lens principle. If the distance from the camera to the detected object is very close to that object, the detection accuracy is more accurate. So based on the results, the object detection with the YOLOv8 model would have the highest accuracy at an estimated distance.
