The behavior of bifurcation and chaos in a laser diode subject with delayed optical feedback is very chaotic and unpredictable. We have theoretically and experimentally demonstrated an extremely significant and useful rule of the growth of bifurcation and chaos displayed in the bifurcation diagram with the injection current. Such a significant rule is attributed to the resonance between the relaxation oscillation frequency and the external cavity frequency. This regularity can provide a principle for the suppression and control of bifurcation and chaos in semiconductor lasers with delayed optical feedback.
