The small signal stability ensures in power system synchronous operation during small disturbances, involving analysis of local and inter-area oscillatory modes. To address insufficient damping torque, this work proposes development of power system stabilizers (PSS) optimally tuned using real-coded genetic algorithm. The input signal for the local PSS is rotor speed deviation and the remote input for the wide area PSS is tie line power which will be obtained from the Phasor Measurement Unit (PMU) in WAMS. The Genetic Algorithm-tuned local PSS is applied to dampen local and inter-area oscillations in a Multimachine 11 Bus two-area power system using MATLAB/SIMULINK 2022b version and Modal analysis in Digsilent PowerFactory 2022, considering machine state variables and their impact on controllability. The study also explores the influence of PV penetration on small signal stability and determines allowable PV penetration during faults for small signal stability improvement in a two-area power system.
