Nurses play a crucial role in mental health care and treatment. However, shifts in policy direction, health service delivery, and nursing education seem to have led to increased role ambiguity. This reflective paper sheds light on how psychiatric nursing often operates within a context dominated by medical models and a diagnostic culture. We contend that the absence of an existential and psychosocial focus in mental health care poses a significant challenge for psychiatric nursing practice. Meaningful care is not about applying pre-established answers to complex situations. Instead, it involves “transcending limits” deploying the courage to step outside the professional confines and delve deeper than symptoms.
