Obesity is a contributing factor to depression and anxiety in women and is linked to decreased cardiorespiratory fitness. Middle-aged women with high levels of anxiety and depression have been found to have higher obesity indices. The relationship between obesity and depression/anxiety is bidirectional, with each potentially causing or exacerbating the other. There is evidence to suggest that the association is more likely in individuals with abdominal obesity. It is known that this type of obesity is strongly linked to metabolic and cardiovascular changes.
