The correct functioning of current transformers (CTs) and relay protection and automation devices (RPA) connected to them, according to new regulatory requirements, must be ensured not only in steady-state, but also in transient modes. Because of this, the selection of the necessary characteristics of a CT is an urgent and non-trivial task associated with many factors. The article is devoted to the development of analytical methods and formulas for determining the characteristics of electromagnetic transformers at the design stage in order to ensure the required time until saturation necessary for the correct operation of relay protection and automation devices in transient modes accompanied by the presence of an aperiodic component of short-circuit current (SC). The results of a comparative analysis of various methods for determining the design characteristics of transformers are presented, as well as a software implementation of the developed method.
