Abstract The water distribution network (WDN) of the Nanded City was designed in 1974 for a population of 4 lakh people. It was extended twice in 1986 and 2001. Due to the extended portion and increased population, required pressure and discharge are not available, especially at the tail end of the network. Hence the capacity expansion analysis, revisit to the design and operation of the WDN is necessary to analyze for required pressure and discharge parameters. The main objective of this study is to analyze the WDN for existing pipe diameters and to design for modified diameters satisfying given hydraulic constraints. This work presents the analysis and modified design of the WDN of Taroda which is part of the Nanded City. The model representing 1737 pipes and 1306 nodes is prepared in WaterGEMS and the tool Darwin Designer from WaterGEMS is used for designing the WDN that solves all nodes and gives the pressure head and flow in the network. After analysis, the WDN is designed for revision in design defining an objective function to maximize hydraulic benefits satisfying all given constraints. The design results give satisfactory results for the optimization of pipe diameters. The pressure at each node was found positive except for only 7 nodes at the extreme ends of the network. This design used available diameters of pipe given as an input and excludes diameters 150mm, 200mm, and 300mm as per given requirements for given constraints.
