Recent years have seen an increase in research interest in battery management systems, where cell equalization is crucial. Even though a lot of time and effort has gone into creating different cell equalization structures, there are still a lot of areas that might be improved upon in terms of performance. Specifically, there is a lack of systematic investigation and mathematical modeling of equalization systems. This study presents the results of an analytical performance investigation of the modularized global equalizer system for lithium-ion battery cell equalization. In particular, a mathematical model that takes energy loss and charging/discharging into account is created to mimic the equalization processes. The energy loss and equalization speed of the introduced model are also compared with the latest structures. According to numerical simulations, the modularized global equalization works better than the others because it uses far fewer equalizers and significantly less energy loss with comparable equalization performance. In addition, a module segmentation guide is provided to facilitate the equalization system design. Keywords—buck converter, soft switching, zero voltage switching, resonant impedance.
