Case report presents successful open surgical removal of a perforating IVC filter, indicating potential for effective intervention.
Inferior vena cava (IVC) filters retained in situ for prolonged periods of time are at risk of filter-related complications and challenges during endovascular retrieval. We report the case of a malpositioned IVC filter with struts perforating the caval wall which was successfully removed by open surgical approach following a failed endovascular attempt and briefly discuss the evidence concerning retained IVC filters as well as use the use of open surgical approaches to explant them.
