Advances in gastric cancer screening and endoscopic technology have made it possible to detect and treat gastric cancer at an early stage. As a result, about 40% of all gastric cancers have now been resected by endoscopic treatment in Japan. In endoscopic diagnosis, magnifying endoscopic observation using band-limited light such as narrow band imaging (NBI) has significantly improved the accuracy of gastric cancer diagnosis. At the same time, in endoscopic treatment, endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) has contributed to increase explosively the number of gastric cancers which could be resected endoscopically. In recent years, the construction of algorism for endoscopic diagnosis and treatment with a view to personalized medicine has been explored, and endoscopic use for gastric cancer managements is expected to develop further in the future.
