This article proposes the integration of digital learning tools (i.e. virtual science laboratories) in a 10-hour teaching session within the bioprocess engineering curriculum. Transformative digital learning technologies can foster active learning, collaboration, and inclusion. The virtual science laboratories, focused on fermentation and tissue engineering, leverage gamification elements, providing an immersive and realistic learning environment. Instructors act as facilitators to guide students through experiments and offer technical support. The simulated virtual environment replaces physical laboratories to supplement traditional teaching, offering pre-laboratory exercises and experiential learning opportunities in order to enhance the learning experience. The study also highlights the advantages and limitations of digital learning environments such as cost implication to achieve widespread adoption of virtual platforms in engineering education.
