Semiconductor nanocrystals, although well recognized for their robustness as biomarkers, nonetheless suffer from certain limitations relating to their cyclability and intermittency. For example, fluorescence intermittency causes single nanocrystals to fluctuate between light and dark states. Likewise, poor multiexciton quantum yields limit the maximum luminosity that a single nanocrystal emitter may achieve. Here, we describe a novel CdTeSSe nanocrystal that shows high photostability and nonblinking behavior along with giant biexciton quantum yields of 35 ± 5.1%. The role of the unusual geometry in giving rise to these nanocrystal properties is discussed.
