Agriculture is an important means of income as it caters to the employment options to the large population in the developing nations across the world. But the agricultural yield is highly affected due to the various pests and diseases leading to the immense economic loss. So, the plant also needs to be observed in their entire life cycle so that such diseases can be avoided. The conventional method of identifying plant diseases is quite challenging as it requires supervising large farms through naked eye observation. Hence, there is a need to accelerate the process by automating the procedure for plant leaves disease detection that incorporates four distinct stages. A lot of researchers have implemented diverse techniques based on image processing and machine learning. The presented paper performs a study on the various research methodologies done in this field along with its shortcomings. The paper would also investigate the future possibilities of research in this field.
