Qualitative analysis reveals COVID-19 exacerbates learning inequalities for children with disabilities, suggesting urgent educational reforms.
The COVID-19 outbreak has caused a global educational catastrophe. The shutdown of educational institutions as a preventative measure to minimise the spread of COVID-19 has negatively affected children's educational attainment, worsening the existing inequalities. As a result, children with disabilities must get extra support, care, and attention. However, the learning process of children with disabilities may be hindered by pre-existing inequities. While emphasising the implementation of the social justice theory, this research adopted a qualitative method. A case study technique was used to collect the primary data. The data was gathered through key informant interviews and focused group discussions using non-probabilistic snowball and convenience sampling. Because of the impacts of COVID-19, seven key issues were discovered using thematic data analysis. As a result of these issues, the learning, mental, and social development of children with disabilities is hampered. There should be no distinction in the quality of education based on whether a student has a disability. Findings from this research might help educational institutions better meet the needs of children with disabilities and provide an inclusive learning environment for every child.
