Isozyme analysis shows genetic differences among southern pine beetle populations, indicating potential adaptive variations.
Isozyme analysis of five enzyme systems in southern pine beetles (Dendroctonus frontalis Zimmerman) and in western pine beetles (D. brevicomis Lec.) revealed genetic differences among widely spaced beetle populations. Georgia, Arizona, and Texas populations differed considerably from each other and from Virginia, North Carolina, and Louisiana populations. Greater differences existed between southeastern populations and populations from Arizona. Isozyme differences were apparent in the adenylate kinase, esterase, and glucose phosphate isomerase enzyme systems. Forest Sci. 25:197-203.
